Welcome Message from the DVC

WELCOME MESSAGE – Nelson Mandela-Fidel Castro Medical Collaboration Programme

Dear Students

Welcome home!!

On behalf of the University of KwaZulu-Natal community, it is my pleasure to welcome you to UKZN’s College of Health
Sciences. I hope you have rested and are now re-energised to begin your term of clinical training at the University of
Choice – the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Returning to the province of KwaZulu-Natal may initially be daunting for you, however we are committed to ensuring your smooth transition into our teaching and learning programme.

As a College, we have planned and adequately prepared for your clinical block training. Together with the KZN Department of Health, our focus has been on ensuring that we provide you with optimal clinical training that’s of the highest quality and in line with the professional requirements of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

We are continuously increasing and improving our Decentralised Clinical Training sites across the province to accommodate a growing number of students in the College of Health Sciences as well as transforming our curriculum to ensure that our graduates are ‘fit for purpose’.

At UKZN, we strive for excellence. We do this in keeping with our mission to become “A truly South African University of Choice that is academically excellent, transformed, innovative in research, entrepreneurial, and critically engaged with society.” On this note, I encourage you all to work towards achieving excellence in clinical training and health care services.

UKZN is anchored on six shared values referred to as the R.E.A.C.H.T values. These values are Respect, Accountability, Client Orientation, Honesty and Trust and serve to guide our  conduct, our engagement with our clients and service delivery, while at the same time  advancing our purpose to inspire greatness. I encourage you to live our values in the way  you conduct yourself, upholding the highest level of professionalism and ethical standards at all times.

The College has developed a comprehensive induction and academic  orientation programme for you. The programme below sets out the logistics for the week-long orientation.

The College team will be available to assist you with any queries that  you may have. I wish your success in your clinical training and look forward to celebrating with you at your Graduation.

I wish you all the best.
