Several matriculants awarded UKZN’s Prestige Entrant Pius Langa Scholarship chose to enrol for degrees in the Health Sciences Discipline.
The learners are from schools whose learners write the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations and are ranked in the top 10in each of the nine provinces as well as learners from Independent Examination Board (IEB) schools in KwaZulu-Natal ranked in the top 50 nationally.
The students are Iyaad Sayhebolay, Ms Saaleha Adam, Ilyas Suliman, Ms Maryam Bassa, Ms Husna Olla, Ms Husnaa Haffejee, Mr Theesen Narasimulu, Ms Jordan Nadasen, Ms Roshaina Depnarain, Nikita Govender and Mr Keenan Rajah.
‘I was in disbelief. I could’ve never imagined soaring to such great heights,’ said Nadasen who matriculated from Al-Falaah College in Durban and aspires to become a surgeon.
‘I feel truly honoured and grateful to be awarded the scholarship. When I received the exciting news, I also felt a great deal of accomplishment knowing that all my hard work throughout my arduous academic career had paid off,’ said Depnarain.
‘After completing my degree, I am determined to study further and specialise in paediatrics or neurology. Providing selfless service and making an impressionable impact on healthcare for those in need will always be my greatest long-term career goal,’ she said.
The students all said they were grateful to the University for encouraging them to study further.
