Warning system for Extreme weather events, Awareness Technology for Healthcare, Equitable delivery, and Resilience (WEATHER) Summary
The WEATHER project (Warning system for Extreme weather events, Awareness Technology for Healthcare, Equitable delivery, and Resilience) addresses the rising health impacts of
extreme weather events (EWEs) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa, where flooding and other EWEs cause severe health challenges, including waterborne disease outbreaks. To
mitigate these impacts, WEATHER aims to develop and implement an Early Warning System (EWS) to enhance healthcare resilience, disaster preparedness, and public health responses
in vulnerable communities. The project’s core objectives include assessing the links between EWEs and disease outbreaks, identifying healthcare capacity needs, developing a pathogen
management tool, and training healthcare professionals in disaster response.
